What is waste management?

The term waste management refers to the various processes to manage and dispose of waste. The primary objective is to reduce the amount of unusable material and to avoid potential health and environmental problems.

The process of waste management includes collection and disposal – including recycling – and monitoring to ensure legal compliance. Basic waste collection of general waste, your everyday household refuse, is usually provided by the local government. This waste is disposed of through landfill compaction and sometimes incineration. Air pollution is a concern when it comes to the later, so it’s not the primary choice for disposal.

Encouraging recycling, reusing and upcycling significantly cuts down on the amount of waste going into landfills. Organic wastes are often biodegradable and once decomposed they can be used as mulch or compost in gardens or agriculture. The methane gas from the breakdown of waste can also be collected and used for generating energy.
